The DTF Printing Process Explained
What is DTF Printing?
Direct to Film (DTF) printing is a groundbreaking method in the garment decoration industry. It allows full-color designs to be printed onto special films and then transferred to fabric using heat and pressure. The DTF printing process is known for its versatility, durability, and ability to work on a wide range of materials including cotton, polyester, and blends—without requiring pre-treatment.
How DTF Printing Works: Step-by-Step Overview
Step 1: Design Creation
The process begins with digital artwork, typically created in design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Designs must be high-resolution (300 DPI recommended) with transparent backgrounds to ensure clean results.
Step 2: Printing on DTF Film
The design is printed directly onto DTF hot peel film using a specialized printer such as a 4-head or 5-head printer. First, color layers are laid down using DTF pigment ink, followed by a white ink layer to enhance visibility and bonding.
Step 3: Application of Hot Melt Powder
While the ink is still wet, the printed film is coated with hot melt adhesive powder. This powder acts as the bonding agent between the design and the garment. After application, any excess powder is gently shaken off.
Step 4: Curing the Powder
The powdered film is placed under a heat source to cure the powder. This can be done using a curing oven or by hovering a heat press slightly above the surface. The powder melts into a sticky, even layer which will bond the design to the fabric during transfer.
Step 5: Heat Press Transfer
Once cured, the film is placed face-down on the garment. Using a heat press set to 300–325°F (150–160°C) for about 10–15 seconds, the design is permanently transferred onto the fabric.
Step 6: Peeling the Film
The film is peeled off while still warm (hot peel method), revealing a vibrant, sharp, and durable design.
Step 7 (Optional): Post-Press
For added durability, you can cover the design with a parchment sheet or Teflon and press for another 5–10 seconds.
