Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing: A Comprehensive Guide
Discover the step-by-step DTF process, from design preparation to heat press application, and how to choose between 5-Head and 4-Head DTF printers for your business.
1. Design Preparation
- Artwork Creation: Prepare vector or high-res raster (300 dpi+) files in sRGB.
- Color Separation & White Underbase: Use RIP software to separate CMYK + White channels.
- Mirror Print: Flip the layout horizontally so it appears correctly on the garment.
2. Film Loading & Printer Setup
- Film Selection: Load PET DTF film rolls or cut sheets into the printer.
- Printer Calibration: Check ink levels (CMYK+White), run nozzle checks, and align heads.
3. Printing the Transfer
- White First, Color Second: Many 5-Head and 4-Head printers fire White and CMYK simultaneously.
- Resolution: Choose between 600×600 dpi for speed or 1200 dpi for fine detail.
4. Powder Application
- Shake & Coat: Transfer wet prints into a powder shake unit with hot-melt adhesive powder.
- Remove Excess: Brush or shake off loose powder for an even coat.
5. Curing & Drying
- Head Shaker-Dryer: Partially cure adhesive and stabilize ink without smearing.
- Conveyor Dryer: Fully melt powder at 140–160 °C for 60–90 s to ensure wash fastness.
6. Heat Press Application
- Pre-Press Garment: Remove moisture and wrinkles with a 3–5 s pre-press.
- Press Settings: 140–160 °C, medium pressure, 10–15 s.
- Peel Type: Hot peel immediately or cold peel after cooling, per powder specs.
7. 5-Head DTF Printers
For high-volume production:
- 5 HEAD DTF Printers – up to 50 m²/hr, CMYK+White across five heads, redundancy during maintenance.
8. 4-Head DTF Printers
Ideal for startups and small shops:
- 4 HEAD DTF Printers – up to 35 m²/hr, compact footprint, modular expansion to five heads.
9. Choosing the Right System
- Print volume & speed needs
- Film width (24", 32", 42")
- Budget vs. ROI on consumables
- Workshop space & ventilation
- After-sales support & software features
10. Maintenance Best Practices
- Daily head flush and nozzle checks
- Weekly white ink recirculation
- Monthly head realignment and color calibration
- Maintain 20–25 °C, 40–60% RH for optimal results
